Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. It is available in both tablet and liquid forms for oral use.
Cefuroxime works by interfering with bacterial cell wall formation, which kills the bacteria and stops them from multiplying, helping the body fight infections.
A healthcare provider may prescribe cefuroxime if you have been diagnosed with bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, certain bone or joint infections, meningitis, or early-stage Lyme disease.
Only a licensed provider can determine if cefuroxime is appropriate for your condition.

APRN
Cefuroxime is available in varying dosages from 125 to 750 mg (milligrams). A healthcare provider can help you determine the appropriate dosage of cefuroxime to take based on your health needs.
Health experts do not recommend taking more than one dose within a 24 hour period. If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Cefuroxime should not be used to treat viral infections like the common cold or flu. It is also not recommended for people with a known allergy to cefuroxime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
A healthcare provider should review your full medical history, including any allergies or kidney problems, and any other medications you are taking, to determine if cefuroxime is safe for you.
A licensed healthcare provider can approve the use of cefuroxime during pregnancy after weighing the benefits and potential risks to you and your baby.
Health experts do not recommend drinking alcohol while taking cefuroxime.
Common side effects of cefuroxime may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, or dizziness. These side effects are usually mild and go away as your body adjusts to the medication.
Severe side effects from cefuroxime are rare, but you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Severe diarrhea or persistent fever should also be reported to your healthcare provider.
Cefuroxime has few known drug interactions, but certain medications may affect how it works or increase side effects. These include antacids, proton pump inhibitors, H2-blockers, and blood thinners like warfarin.
Always tell your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking before starting cefuroxime.
It’s possible to overdose on cefuroxime. Be sure to seek emergency assistance if you believe you or someone you know may have overdosed on cefuroxime.
Your body absorbs cefuroxime within a few hours of taking the medication. Many people begin to notice improvement in their infection symptoms within two to three days, though the exact timing can vary depending on the type and severity of the infection.
LifeMD provides access to licensed healthcare providers who can address your health concerns and prescribe medications. Through our virtual platform, you can schedule same-day appointments. If appropriate, your healthcare provider can arrange for your medication to be sent to your local pharmacy.
