Fidaxomicin is available as a 200 mg (milligram) tablet. A healthcare provider can help you determine the appropriate dosage of fidaxomicin to take based on your health needs.
Health experts do not recommend taking more than one dose within a 24 hour period. If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Both fidaxomicin and vancomycin are effective in treating C. difficile infections. However, fidaxomicin may be better at reducing the likelihood of infections recurring.
It’s not recommended to take fidaxomicin for a cold, flu, or other viral infections.
As with any medication, it’s possible to be allergic to fidaxomicin. Be sure to let a healthcare provider know if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction after taking fidaxomicin.
Currently, research is unclear on the safety of taking fidaxomicin during pregnancy. A licensed healthcare provider can assess whether this medication is safe for you if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Health experts do not recommend drinking alcohol while taking fidaxomicin, as alcohol can irritate the intestines and may worsen side effects like diarrhea or stomach upset.
You may experience the following side effects while taking fidaxomicin:
Severe side effects from fidaxomicin are rare. Contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, severe rash, or difficulty breathing.
Some people may also experience common side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.
Fidaxomicin has few known drug interactions, but it’s still important to tell your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking before starting treatment.
It’s possible to overdose on fidaxomicin. Be sure to seek emergency assistance if you believe you or someone you know may have overdosed on fidaxomicin.
Fidaxomicin is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream. It works mainly in the intestines to target C. difficile bacteria. Many people start to notice improvement in symptoms within three to five days of starting treatment, although the exact timing can vary.
