Sulfacetamide is an antibiotic in the sulfonamide class (often called a “sulfa drug”). It’s most commonly used in eye drops or ointments to treat bacterial eye infections, and in topical creams or lotions to treat skin conditions like acne or seborrheic dermatitis.
Sulfacetamide works by blocking an enzyme that bacteria need to make folic acid, an essential vitamin for their growth and survival. Without folic acid, the bacteria can’t multiply, which helps the infection clear.
This makes sulfacetamide a bacteriostatic antibiotic, meaning it stops bacteria from growing rather than directly killing them.
You may qualify for sulfacetamide if you have a bacterial eye infection, acne, or a skin condition like seborrheic dermatitis that your doctor determines can be treated with it. It may not be right for you if you’re allergic to sulfa drugs, are pregnant or breastfeeding without medical clearance, or have certain blood or kidney conditions.
A healthcare provider will review your infection type, medical history, and other medications before deciding if sulfacetamide is safe and appropriate for you.

APRN
No, sulfacetamide is not a steroid. It’s a sulfonamide antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from growing, rather than reducing inflammation like a steroid would.
Sulfacetamide usually starts working within a few days, but noticeable improvement can take one to two weeks, depending on the type and severity of the infection or skin condition.
It’s important to use it as prescribed and finish the full course for best results.
Sulfacetamide is generally considered low risk during pregnancy when used as directed, especially in topical or eye drop forms. However, your doctor will weigh the benefits and potential risks before prescribing it to ensure it’s safe for you and the baby.
There’s no known interaction between sulfacetamide and alcohol, so drinking won’t usually affect its effectiveness. Since it’s typically used topically or as eye drops, alcohol doesn’t impact the medication’s action.
The most common side effects of sulfacetamide include mild burning, stinging, or itching at the application site. When used on the skin, some people may also experience redness or dryness, and with eye drops, temporary blurred vision or eye irritation can occur.
