Understanding Birth Control

Birth control refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy by either stopping ovulation, blocking sperm from reaching an egg, or preventing a fertilized egg from implanting. Hormonal birth control (like pills) work by altering hormone levels to prevent ovulation, whereas barrier methods (like condoms) physically block sperm from reaching an egg.

Birth control can provide benefits beyond pregnancy prevention, such as regulating periods, reducing menstrual cramps, clearing acne, and managing conditions like PCOS or endometriosis. Getting the right birth control plan can help you take control of your reproductive health and find a method that fits your lifestyle.

In the past, you would have needed to visit a doctor before you could get a prescription for hormonal birth control. With LifeMD, you can get immediate help and birth control prescriptions online without an in-office appointment. Prescription birth control can effectively prevent pregnancy and help you manage your reproductive health with convenience and confidence.

Combination birth control pills

Combination birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin hormones that work together to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining. They're taken daily at the same time each day and are highly effective when used correctly. Common brands include Yaz, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, and Lo Loestrin Fe. These pills can also help regulate periods, reduce acne, and ease menstrual cramps.

Progestin-only pills (mini pills)

Progestin-only pills, also called mini pills, contain only progestin and work primarily by thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. They're a good option for people who can't take estrogen due to certain health conditions or who are breastfeeding. Common brands include Norethindrone and Camila. They must be taken at the same time every day for maximum effectiveness.

Common Questions About Birth Control

How do online birth control prescriptions work?

Online birth control prescriptions typically involve a virtual consultation with a licensed healthcare provider. During the consultation, you can discuss your health history, current medications, lifestyle factors, and contraceptive goals.

Your provider will assess whether hormonal birth control is safe for you and recommend the best option based on your needs. You'll then receive a prescription that can be sent directly to your local pharmacy for pickup or delivered to your home, depending on the service.

What should I tell my doctor during the virtual consultation?

It's important to be open and honest during your consultation to help your healthcare provider determine the safest and most effective birth control option for you. Be sure to provide your doctor with detailed information, such as:

• Your menstrual cycle patterns and any irregularities
• Current medications, supplements, or herbal products you're taking
• Previous birth control methods you've tried and their outcomes
• Underlying health conditions, family medical history, or any allergies

The more information you can provide, the better your doctor can assess your needs and prescribe the right birth control method for you.

How effective is prescription birth control?

Prescription birth control pills are highly effective when used correctly. With perfect use - meaning taking the pill at the same time every day without missing any doses – combination pills are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

With typical use, which accounts for occasional missed pills or inconsistencies, effectiveness drops to about 91%. Progestin-only pills require even more precise timing and are about 87-99% effective depending on adherence. Consistent and correct use is key to maximizing effectiveness.

How long does it take to start working?

When it comes to birth control pills, the time frame depends on when you start taking them. If you start combination pills within the first five days of your menstrual period, they're effective immediately. If you start at any other time in your cycle, you'll need to use backup contraception like condoms for the first seven days.

Progestin-only pills take 48 hours to become effective regardless of when you start them, so backup contraception is recommended during that time. It's important to follow your provider's instructions on when to start and when additional protection is needed.

Do I need insurance coverage for online birth control?

LifeMD accepts certain insurance plans in specific states. If your insurance plan is accepted, it may cover the cost of your virtual appointment.

Please note: the cost of your LifeMD membership will not be covered by insurance, and the process to confirm any prescribed medication coverage is separate and will depend on your diagnosis and insurance plan. While we are committed to expanding our coverage, please refer to our insurance coverage page to see the current states and plans we accept.

If you have further questions about your specific plan or coverage, please contact our support team at (800) 852-1575, or your insurance provider for more detailed information.
